Actually, I really don’t see what this says about Liz, except she doesn’t like following instructions. Its way too open ended for it to describe her character much. She could be a suicidal teenager who hates life, or she could believe in superstition and have read tarot cards that describe her death. Or she could just be looking for an excuse not to write an actual response for the teacher.
I don’t mean to be negative, and if someone could explain their take on this to make me understand why this says so much about Liz, I would really appreciate it.
@Violet: I guess I see how it says a lot about her because she can’t be bothered with thinking about the future or even writing about it. What’s the point in wasting her time in doing that? Her life is nothing, a speck in the dust that nobody would miss. To me, it carries over what was established during math class.
However, I tend to project my young self onto Liz. While I didn’t have any boys in love with me when I was that age, I did have very similar thoughts: nobody cares, I’m not going to live that long anyway, etcetera. They weren’t rooted in superstition or suicide, but just in loneliness. I felt like nobody understood me, and I think that Liz manifests herself in the same way.
Wow! I can’t believe a simple handful of words can create such a discussion!
I have nothing really substantial to add — I’d really like the brevity of the story to speak for itself — but I’ll simply echo and add to what Gurth and LMR said (both of whom are spot-on with their interpretations). Liz isn’t necessarily contemplating suicide. She just has a completely skewed sense of self-worth, and one of the things that is a result of that is seeing no future for oneself. To her, caught up in her own feelings of doubt and self-loathing, anything could happen in 25 years, but more than likely hers is the path of self-destruction.
