Bye-Bye Mommy

“Mommy! Mommy!”
“What, sweetie?”
“Can Betty sleep over tonight?”
“No, hon. I’m sorry. But you can sleep over at her house tonight.”
“Yay!”

The two little ones ran to the phone, dragging me with. I picked up the phone and made the call. I began to pack my daughter’s bag for the night. Well, bags. I wasn’t coming home, because when she left… So did I. I packed the bags and then went into my office, shutting the door behind me.

I sat down at my desk and opened my laptop. Clicking Microsoft Word, I wrote up who I want my daughter to go to. More than once my baby had told me that she and Betty were sisters, and, well, soon they would be. I had never told my daughter this, but I had cancer. I had been told I had six months to live.

Suddenly my office door opened. I turned to see her standing in the doorway.
“Betty’s mom is here!”
“Okay, sweetie. Have a good time.”
“Ok, bye-bye, Mommy!”

As she ran to the car, I smiled sadly and whispered,
“Trust me, Kid. You have no idea who I am.”
As I waved my last goodbye.
