Five
The Doctor jumped back into the shadows
“He’s dead!”
Everyone looked at him. Someone whispered “Good riddance.”
Ken tiptoed over the bags and mattresses that covered the floor and picked up the billionaire’s body, placing it atop the pyre that had built up with the mass of bodies.
“This isn’t right,” K’Tea said.
“Right,” Katya placed her hand on her newfound friend’s back. “We were chosen to survive. And now there’s more dead here than alive.”
Ken sat with Jean-Luc and Jeremiah handed him a blanket.
“She’s right,” the preacher said. “We have to stop, now.”
“Yes,” the Doctor agreed. “We are only six left. We are the ones left to repopulate the Earth. And we only have two women left.”
“Well we didn’t exactly start with even numbers,” Jean-Luc muttered.
Ken started to rub his head, only this time K’tea noticed.
“Ken, are you okay?” She tiptoed over the debris and began to rub his shoulders. Everyone looked this time as Ken keeled over, a needle sticking out of his back.
Five left on Planet Earth.
