“Oh, come on Nads,” Jenna cried. “We had a deal!”
“I know, I know. I just couldn’t help it. It was free! Free, I tell you!”
“Well, then, you owe me a tenner.”
“No, I don’t.”
“What do you mean, you don’t? You are plain as day drinking Diet Coke. See, look, right there.” Jenna pointed to my can as Nadia took a nonchalant sip. “Wow. See, you’re not even attempting to stop.”
“I think you gave up first.”
“What do you mean?”
“I saw that slice of lemon meringue. I saw you eat the whole thing up, then throw the whole damned plate in the bin when I knocked on your door.”
Jenna sighed, defeated. “I know. I— I couldn’t help it. I’m sorry.”
“Let’s not do that again.”
“Deal.”
Then Jenna left the cafè to snort coke in her bathroom and Nadia pulled out a spliff, both glad to have kept this one secret safe from their significant other.
