Yeah, it was inspired, partially, by the witches of Macbeth. I actually wrote a longer version for a flash fiction site I ran several years ago, but I trimmed some of the fat to make it work here. I actually like the trimmed version a little better.
Nice references to Macbeth, although the story is very much your own – the historical inclusion of Newton was interesting – I wonder whether there’s any relevance beyond the first four letters of his name – perhaps some kind of rivalry between science and magic?
No, that’s pretty much where the relevance stops – at least in my own mind. I just thought it was amusing to put a twist on the type of newt used in a witches’ brew. You are, of course, welcome to assign any additional relevance you wish. I must admit – I’d never made the connection between science and magic until you pointed it out. :)
