My Sister's Heart
I wake up, drowsy from the medicine they’ve given me. My chest hurts, a numb pain. I feel empty inside, knowing she’s gone, knowing that I will never see her again. I took her heart and I can’t return it. The tears fall silently for my sister. My eyes close to the bright lights of the hospital room, but the tears leak through.
I hear the door slide open and footsteps. I open my eyes slightly and stare at the newcomers. My family and the doctor stand in front of me, their faces grave. They’ve been crying too.
“How are you feeling Dane?” The doctor asks.
“Dead.” My mom’s face hardens and softens. The doctor smiles simpathetically at me.
“My condolences for your loss. But how does your heart feel?” I offer a curt nod. My mother comes over to hug me and I flinch.
“I’m sorry,” I mumble. She gives me a weak smile before she and the rest of my family leave the room.
“Your recovery is going well. You should be going back to school in a few days.” Then my doctor leaves.
And I’m alone again. I miss you Maya.
