I like the tone of this. Those first two sentences are dynamite and pull you right in! I like where this could go.

Lovely telling of a violent moment here, though a violent moment skillfully imbued with a meaning and importance beyond the conflict at hand. Very nicely done to write from the perspective of the conquerors, very much in their voice.
