Freedom and Chaos

“You have made friends with Emrys,” Arthur said.

Lila stood just inside his tent, waiting for some order. Unless she was supposed to just know what to do? He was already wearing a gambeson and leggings. She spied his armor in the corner.

“He’s helpful and kind, My Lord,” she said. “Do you need your armor?”

Arthur nodded. “In your father’s lands, are you promised to a man?”

“No,” Lila said. “You see, courtship in my lands is more…voluntary. Once people, boys and girls alike, are eligible to be introduced into society –” were old enough to drive – “we are allowed to court by choice. So if a boy likes a girl and she likes him back, they attempt some courtship events and if the relationship seems mutually to their liking, they marry.”

Arthur eyed her, amused and curious. “So much freedom in your lands, Lady Lila. How do the people survive amidst such chaos?”

“We’re smarter than you give us credit for, My Lord,” Lila said, and reached for his armor.

Arthur smiled. “Then you don’t like any boys back?”
