The characters are almost detached from the reader, which of course makes perfect sense after the last line – and yet, on second read, there is a new layer of emotion because of the utter hopelessness of the situation – if the character were alive, they could at least make a go of conquering death, but this way…

Uh, N’s right. Live isn’t italicized. Anyway, nice job. Although, the ending was kind of obvious from the beginning. Or was that just me?
