Where There's Smoke, There's Fire (II)

“My name is Denny,” He says. I’m in his truck waiting for the ambulance to come. I hate to leave Marcus still in the car, but what else am I supposed to do? He’s bleeding. When the ambulance finally arrives, they pry open Marcus’ door and pull him onto a stretcher. The police weren’t far behind, and I was prepared to answer questions.

“Ma’m, what happened?” I got out of the truck with the strength I had gathered waiting for the ambulance and stood in front of the cop.

“He was high. Passed out in the middle of the road.”

“And you got in the car with him?”

“I didn’t know he was high at the time. Besides he was a little hostile.”

“Why didn’t you call the police once you discovered he was driving high?” He was beginning to irritate me, asking questions like I had all the power in the world to prevent this. Well, I did a long time ago.

“Oh, let me just pull the cell phone out of my va—”

“Please, no foul language. I’m just trying to investigate what happened okay?”

“Just ask Marcus?”

“He’s dead.”
