This was for the speculative fiction challenge. We were supposed to imagine how history would have been different if something had changed, so this is about life if prohibition were still around. This is US-centric, so if you’re in another country it might make even less sense.
A subtle point but well made, slipping in the dress code as signifying that successful run of prohibition would have been only the first step in more and more federal intrusions into personal choice. And the last line is nicely poetic.
It’s funny… some states actually had prohibition in place until the 1980’s, and there are still “dry” counties here and there. Those tend to be the kinds of places where they get angry at the tax man, but then want to legislate how low you can wear your pants.
I have heard of it, but it’s not a book, it’s a play. And it’s based on a poem by Langston Hughes that is awesome. Prometheus is a pretty popular symbol, used in a lot of literature since antiquity. Nothing new under the sun, not even raisins. Thanks for reading.
