Your use of the word ‘once’ throughout is really good here – towards the beginning there was a danger of it getting a little stereotypical – but the character’s acceptance of the situation, and furthermore her justification are so well written that this is a truly compelling read.

How very sad. It portrays well how someone could be led to believe that the abuse is their fault and why they don’t just get out of the situation. He may hit her “just once”, but once is once too often. I felt badly for her and angry at him. You’ve done a wonderful job with this. It made me shiver.

Everybody’s taking my comment the wrong way. I meant that she keeps caring, and so does he, even though he keeps hitting her. Even if it is in a warped way.

no, i got it, yes they do care, but its the warped part that makes me want to shut this kind of thing off from my thoughts.
