I enjoyed this a lot, perhaps because it is so very different. I see that it is an open letter but I am not sure what that means in this context. The ideas are strong and penetrate with increasing complexity. It feels like something from the early nineteen hundreds but for us. Excellent work.
very true, and the thought of what the computer in Hitchhiker’s is doing right now amuses me… your story reminds me of this. I like to think of it writing stories, rather than playing endless facebook apps…
I have to admit, I really don’t read as much sci-fi as I should, and I’m not very well versed in the classics (I’m only just now reading Ender’s Game to give an example), so most of my thoughts are based off pretty common stuff, and I’ve not yet run out of new books to read.
That said, I’m not sure I agree that the characters have to be original, but I think that’s because of a difference in our definition of the word. Take Malcolm Reynolds for example. He’s not exactly original, but very detailed and well developed. I suppose you could consider him original in that he’s not a cookie cutter clone of classic leaders, but even Captain Picard had a certain level of depth (and more than a few similarities to Mal).
