Harassment
The atmosphere in Cairo is a medley of very different worlds. Like a group of bubbles made of active chemicals that have reactive effects. As a woman in Cairo I can’t walk on the streets and not expect to get harassed. Cairo is known for its sexual harassment and every women I know tells a similar story… “Once when I was getting into a train this guy grabbed my…” “I carry my purse like a weapon now just in case any of these ass holes try anything.” “I feel uncomfortable walking the streets of Cairo without a man…” Most of the stories are terrible, but not to the level of rape or abduction. These experiences are reserved for more vulnerable groups such as refugees and people in abject poverty. This is not to say that these things do not happen to foreigners, only that it is much rarer and good old harassment is much more common.
