The subtle shift in tone towards the end here is nothing short of beautiful and poignant – I didn’t see it coming, and it got me…
I liked the little dentist anecdote, it kind of broke the ice for a story that walked a thin line between ‘fiction’ and ‘autobiography’, and then you have the whole main story, with subtle emphasis placed on the mother character – clever.
That penultimate line is so simple and sad – but then you have an almost optimistic closer, which is nice, as it’s almost suggestive of that love of reading being the mother’s legacy…
Lovely. A bit plodding before you get to the finale, but well worth the wait – MH :)
Thanks! All of that was actually true. That’s why I fell in love with reading, was because of my mom and our trips to the library. It brought back so many good memories when I was writing this.
