Final Refuge

The four wheel drive bounced quietly over the empty landscape as the sun slowly peeked over the horizon, igniting the landscape in a fiery orange glow.

“We’re gonna have to ditch the car soon” Jess declared. “We’re nearly out of fuel”
“Humph. I was getting used to this” I muttered.
“With our luck, we’ve probably got every zed in the state after us now” Jess noted.
“Probably. Hopefully, that chopper will have reported us, but we still need to get out of here” I replied somberly.
“Those jerks in the army are the reason for all this. You’d think the least they could do was evac us” Jess snarled, not taking her eyes off the ground in front of her.
“The zeds will be hiding for the next twelve hours, so maybe they’ll come looking for us then. I think we should get some rest though. We’ve been pushing it all night. I doubt we’d survive another night” I stated.

I looked over at Jess. She was positively exhausted. Her eyes were puffy, and thick bags were forming underneath them.
“We can stop in the clearing ahead”.
