8BY

We soon had our requisite third participant. Jean-Martin called while I was on the phone with Withers, the annoying call waiting interruption blotting out part of the latter’s sentence. He was speaking in his usual rapid-fire stilted English.

The 8BY station that was based out of France had, according to him, begun broadcasting fifteen minutes ahead of schedule. Normally it started on the hour plus forty minutes. Today it had started on the hour plus twenty-five, and had repeated the same message incessantly.

Before dialing up the 8BY station I informed Jean-Martin about the new woodpecker signal and asked if he’d assist in the direction-finding. He said “oui”. Almost instantly after saying so, I heard him practically fall out of his chair, eagerly searching for his equipment. I shouted over the line that I would be hanging up until I found the source. I then apologized to Withers for yelling straight into his ear unintentionally. He merely chuckled and hung up, promising to call back when he finished.
