Sounds painful, and cool to see you continuing the story started by another author.
You might want to try experimenting with spacing (making new paragraphs). It can help with read-ability, and here especially I think you could have gotten some dramatic effect from breaking it up at strategic points to emphasize a change in thought or a new resolution.
