Thanks Joe. Not sure where this came from. Just popped into my head late last night and has put me into a bleh of melancholy ever since. Glad it yanked a heart string, though.
This reminds me of that scene from Boston Legal, where Alan is joking with Denny about how he forgot that Alan was his son. Not that your story is funny, just that it’s my most recent memory of an Alzheimer’s interaction.
I can’t imagine how difficult something like that would be, but I think you did a great job of bringing the emotion into this piece. The nonchalant way “Arlen” enters the room, even after his father calls him by the wrong name, gives us an idea of how often this sort of thing happens. He’s simply used to the lie at this point, regardless of how much it hurts.
