Hmm, I’m not sure what to make of this. It took a while to grasp the meaning, that it was said driver’s own conscience that created the story of his dad telling him to pick up Mr. Gennerson.
One minor detail: You missed out the word ‘in’ in the second sentence.

I like this a lot, it has a wholesome feel to it. One thing- you missed a comma in the sentence “That’d be lovely, Bill.” Nice work!
