took me a while to connect the meaning in the last sentence to the rest of the story.. at first I thought he was referring to treating the beggar as he would treat himself, but it became apparent he was referring to treating his wife as he would treat himself. World hunger, poverty and disease taking a backseat to the superfluous problems of others.

Aw that last line is cute. ‘I want two hundered pounds so I’ll give it to him.’
