Hero in his own mind
“This is it, this is what I have been waiting for.”
Bobby exhaled long and hard and stared down the bay doors that separated him from glory. His palms were slick with sweat and he was tapping both feet on the ground in double time, full of anxious energy.
He sat among his company mates, dressed in full combat gear and ready for their first battle. Pacing in front of them the platoon commander droned on with the same boring crap they had been pounding into them since basic.
In his head Bobby was replaying the commercials he had seen back home. The reason he joined up was to be right here living that action flick. Now the months of training had prepared him for the role. He could feel the adrenaline pumping in anticipation of storming that field and being deep in that live fire, rushing the enemy and unloading on them full force.
“I made it. I am a hero. I am an army of one.”
Bobby jumped up off the bench, slamming the access button. As the blast doors slid apart he ran out screaming. “FOR GLOOOOORY!!!”
