ew, like statuesque, barely living corpses, or army of dead people like heads on pikes to warn the enemy, cuz it’s too human to be trees standing there. But you mix the natural beauty with the unnatural destructive forces with a measured hand. :)
Beautifully disgusting. I first thought of stone statues, then standing against a cause so the end of bones standing resolute in the rain came as a surprise.
This wasn’t intended to be quite this dark when I wrote it.
My initial mental imagery had been of protesters (e.g. environmental protesters blockading the path of a new road), but somewhere I took a bit of a left turn down a much darker path, and ended up with something rather apocalyptic.
I rather like that it’s unclear who or what is standing vigil, and I thank you all for your kind comments.
I am thinking of bodies turned to pillars of ash in a nuclear blast, like those at Hiroshima. Powerful imagery. My only note is that “destruction” is spelled incorrectly in the last sentence.
Amazingly beautiful, poignant and intriguing all at the same time. I sometimes wonder if this will be how alien life finds us – withered in nuclear destruction, radiation the signal that draws life to us. If I ever get a minute there might be a sequel to this one…
