Nicely and simply told. It reminded me of an episode of Torchwood, though I think the situation was slightly different. Still, I think it speaks to the same desire for continuity and real companionship.
Reminds me of Orson Scott Card’s The Worthing Saga, I believe. Might have been the Worthing Chronicles that I’ve read, but they probably both have the institution of allowing people to sleep for years at a time then be awake briefly. It was a good read, interestingly part of it focused around one man’s quest to destroy the “Institution of Long Sleep” (cuz I don’t remember his name for it) because he felt that it was ruining humanity.
Incidentally, a million hours is 114 years, so he’d be pretty long in the tooth by the time he got there, assuming that he was at least 20 when he was sentenced…
Although it’s been proven that the more you oversleep the quicker it is till your death, I love the concept. It’s a scary proposition. Spending history asleep – almost dead.
Difficult though it is to squeeze some meaningful emotion out of someone who doesn’t really have the time to develop as a character I think by the end this did read a little too much like a medical trial report to me than a story…
Still, it’s thought-provoking, and you’ve got to respect that, so well done – MH :)
