Mistakes of the Fourth Kind
I woke up the next morning and immediately threw up in my mouth. Without looking I knew that Jake was lying next to me as I looked at the picture of me and Heather I always kept by my bed. Looking over my shoulder I saw he was still fast asleep.
“I’ll leave you there,” I said to myself. I always talk aloud in the morning. “I have an exam anyway.”
I had two hours before the exam started but I decided to walk there early. I needed the air to clear all the shit from my brain. Memories of the night before caused a rueful smile to spread across my face, but at each one I forced to shake my head – leave the past behind and face the oncoming storm of Statistics.
I must have walked around the park seven times before I looked at my watch and started towards school. A car horn honked from behind and slowly stopped beside me.
“Hey!” The voice made my heart stop. “Hey, stranger!”
I turned around and stopped myself puking again as I looked her in the eyes, and Heather smiled right back, oblivious to my betrayal.
