That was simultaneously a Carly Simon reference and high praise because this is gorgeous. Evocative in so many ways, it just draws the reader in so exquisitely, and demonstrates the underappreciated art of showing not telling…
And rightly so! It’s not told in an overly complicated way, but really there’s so much here—feeling, emotion, questions even. It’s just beautiful. Kind of reminds me of Hemingway in the uncomplicated telling, but it’s something completely different.
Oddly enough I think my favorite bit is the description of the boats, and the narrator’s reaction to them. It’s interesting… I like it.
