I’ve tried to write something like this before, and getting the message across to the reader as well as conveying the character’s thoughts is a real challenge – you’ve tackled it admirably here!
Perhaps you could have been a little braver and left the end even more open-ended than you did – letting the reader pick up on subtle hints like the blood, the lack of hunger and the absence of Rachel to piece together the scene in their mind rather than get the answer in the conclusion?
But overall, a well-written cross between character study and mystery – good work! MH :)
I know, except I watched Chicago today and in ‘Cell Block Tango’, Velma says “It was only that night when I was washing the blood off my hands I even knew they were dead” and the only way I could stop thinking about it was to write it out.
