I most enjoyed the anthropomorphism that was introduced – attributing insanity (and the ominous death by assisted suicide) to some_thing_ given a thoroughly boring and monotonous job. It’s a comic exposition, behind which is hiding a realistic tragedy. 5s, and a sequel (though perhaps not linearly related).
Thanks, guys! This is the same world as my very first Ficly: http://ficly.com/stories/1246
A friend and I have been working on making it a comic book but I still like to explore it on my own every so often. Glad I was able to get the right tone of an IT guy… I’ve known enough of them and have heard the stories. There is a reason the first thing they have to ask is “Did you plug it in and turn it on?”
The dialogue is perfect and the humor scores as much as the robot didn’t. And I completely agree with diving straight into a different universe; I think that’s what the best Ficlys seem to do.
