Mark’s eyebrows were dragged down by gravity again and he reluctantly followed his mother’s tugging.
“If we leave now we won’t see the Ferry Men again, don’t you want to see them?”
“I’ve seen Them before and They bring trouble. It’s dangerous when a Man mixes with men and women Mark, and neither of us will be in Port to witness it.”
“But why are they like that mams? I think we could keep out of trouble, the Ferry Man didn’t look-”
“The Ferry Men are not normal men Mark. They are more than men, and it is always dangerous to be around Them, we are mice and They are cats.”

If they become well known they are invited to a meeting with Ferry Men, if they attend the meeting and if they come out alive they always burn what they own and board the ship with the other Ferry Men, this is when they begin their transition from a man to a Man.”
