I think this one is the one that spoke to me the most. A more existential kind of hell.
They say Hell is simply being beyond the notice of God. And that ties in nicely with the lack of purpose here. No overseer. No authority.
I agree with the idea that humans are far more capable of evil than any fictional demon has ever been. (A topic also brought up in Neil Gaimans “Sandman”, Warren Ellis’s “Preacher” and others).
If there is a hell (which I don’t think there is, as an atheist), I would find this type of hell to be the most plausible. No god, no devil, just souls forever searching for purpose and demons who can’t be bothered with punishing because it all seems so utterly pointless. Better to play cards.
