More flat surface, since the prow is pointy. Standard procedure is to go into the jump with the plate pointing backwards, using the momentum of the ship to shove it through the “jump zero”.
My only critique is the use of the word “though” twice in the first paragraph. I really think it would read better if you took both of them out. Even taking one out would improve it immensely.
