Chasing Hill
To anyone else, this is a dangerous game.
With every leap, every maneuver, the probability of our lives ending in a gruesome death increases. I’m following Alice, who in turn, is running down Hill. We’ve been practicing this run for months, making sure our strength is sufficient, our resolve, determined.
I’ve been doing this for a while now, and yet, I’ve never tried this jump before.
“Still behind me, Jim?”
“I’m ready, we do this or die trying” I replied. The com unit chirped back.
“Something’s wrong, the jump’s coming up and I’ve lost Hill”, her voice, a tone of desperation. Now I was scared.
“What do you mean, ’you’ve lost Hill? I thought you were right behind him”
“He took a corner, and when I caught up he was gone, Jim, the jump-”
The link was broken, the last stretch was up ahead.
I picked up speed. My heart was racing. Suddenly I saw why the link went dead.
It was too late. I was on automatic.
The leap was executed perfectly. What came ahead, I’ll never forget.
