To the Ends of the Earth
Earth’s precipice never seen
Visible as toes cross the brink
Widening chasm lies below
Depth toys with eyes and heart
Shallow on descent
Towering crag to climbing hands
Standing ramrod straight
Pitiful pillars once called men
Rictus grins of morbid joy
Rigored hands clutching shriveled prize
Hearts held out prayerlike
Chests flung open as empty tombs
Reaching the end and its beyond
For love not theirs to possess
Blind leaps of faith taken to that below
Eternal servitude to love’s great greed
Love’s true nature unknown even now
That one should strive and bring return
Reaching the edge I did not stay
My goal was her entire and not her heart alone
