Cowardice

“Is that going to be all for you tonight?”

“Yep, I think this will do it,” I said.

She put my books in a bag, but paused upon picking up Hubert Selby Jr.’s Requiem for a Dream.

“I love this book,” she said.

“Me too. It’s absolutely amazing. The ending when Harry-”

“I know! Tears, just tears everywhere,” she said.

I pick up a CD.

“Aww, Band of Horses! I love these guys!”

" Yeah, that’s their newest one. It’s pretty awesome." she said.

“You like them?” I asked.

“Who wouldn’t? The First Song? Best song ever.”

I set the CD down and grabbed my books.

“Have a good night!” she said.

“You too!”

I met up with John outside.

“What were you talking about?” he asked.

“Band of Horses. I think she’s the first girl I’ve ever met that likes Selby and Band of Horses. That makes her perfect, right?” I laughed.

“She was cute,” he said.

“She was cute.”

“You should go talk to her,” John said.

“I can’t,” I said.

“Why not?” he asked.

“I’ve got a stain on my shirt.”

Damn my cowardice.
