Innocence and Vigilance
The soft white of the snow reflected the rays of the sun, and the world shone like it was made out of diamonds. The air was hotter and denser than blankets of snow would normally indicate. For some reason ice didn’t melt here.
“’It’s not really ice- at least not the kind you put in drinks. This stuff’ll kill you.”
That was Kenneth. He was being paid to make sure we didn’t accidently die out here. He had the unnerving ability to read my mind. He says it’s on account of me being so innocent. I rolled my eyes just thinking about it.
“If you weren’t a virgin it wouldn’t be half as easy.” He laughed, catching me again.
Embarrassed, I looked around to see if anyone was paying attention.
“Not so loud.” I whispered. I regretted ever telling him about that. In my defense I had been drunk at the time. Now I knew better, but out here drinking was the only escape .
“Who cares if you’re a virgin? Maybe if I talk a little louder one of those women will take some pity on you.” Thankfully he didn’t raise his voice.
