Michael Crichton wrote a book a while back about a nanoswarm that took over some humans, but it was less zombie-ish and more fully-risen-intelligence-usurping-your-body evil.

Actually, think I read that one Jim, and although I found it was a little bland for my tastes, it does sound like the rest of the story to your premise :D

I had to look it up. The book is called Prey. The science and theory behind it was fascinating, as I recall, but I agree — the execution of the story was a bit dry for my tastes. My idea of a nanoswarm takeover is much different. :)

need sequel

This is actually one I’m going to sit on for a bit. I have an actual, full-length short story planned, instead.
