They didn’t have longer to go.
And then, their eyes locked onto a single shape on one of the ice towers that spiraled up in a smooth conical rope. A single moving shape. All they could make out as they hurled downward was four or six arms, a head with multiple ornamentations of crystal, and legs that adhered to the side of the ice with a thick glistening blue jelly. And as they passed it, it waved at them, moving one of its arms in a multi-jointed spin. The joints made hard noises as the smooth limb sections touched.

They could swear they heard a harmonic humming – was it singing to them?
And even as they heard the dull roar of the surf, Nell and Ted couldn’t take their eyes from the creature. Even as they came so close to the lake that their bodies began to freeze, they attempted to move their heads upward to see the creature better.
