Marie Curie and Calamity Jane Go to Pluto
Marie Curie awoke. She had no idea of where she was, or even of who she was. Prior to her blackout, the last thing she remembered was her working late by herself in the lab, messing with a sample of radium. There was an explosion and a bright flash, or something similar, and then…
…and then…
…she could remember no further. All she knew was that she was a human being, and she was feeling rather heavy.
A rather youthful and feminine voice shouted, “Oooooops!”
Marie opened her eyes. A young, giggly teenage girl wearing some sort of white suit was pushed back in a chair, weighted down by the severe gravity. “Silly me,” the girl continued, singsong, “I did it again!”
“Who…” Marie struggled to speak. “Who are you?”
“Oh?” The girl turned to look at her. “Hi! My name’s Janet, but my friends call me ‘Calamity Jane’! Do you happen to know anything about how to disengage a spacecraft autopilot?”
“Space-what?” Marie breathed. “Auto-what?”
“I guess not, then…oh well, I’ve always wanted to go to Pluto!”
