I’m currently reading Robin Hobb’s Assassin’s Apprentice, the memoirs of the bastard son of a Prince who becomes an assassin for the King. It made me wonder what would happen if circumstances aligned themselves such that someone like this would end up taking the throne, so that the King and his assassin wound up being the same person. The above is the (partial) result.

i have that book. :) that would be one skinny king, and i’d always pictured them fatter..

I think it depends A) on who the author is, and B) what sort of king it is. Some are fat, and others are more fit.

Definitely liked the twist there at the end. Very imaginatively gory calling card for your royal assassin, though I’m not sure of the practicality of actually getting a knife through a frontal bone. Then again, I’ve never really tried it, since we used a bone saw.

@THX – I debated over that a bit and almost went with him driving it through the Duke’s temple, but I just really liked the visual of a dagger protruding from his forehead.

I agree. Having the King actually be the assassin gives the story a whole new view point that I’m not disappointed in. Good one!

I have to admit, when I finished this one up, I wasn’t entirely sure how I felt about it, so I’m thrilled that everyone’s enjoying it. :)

Y’know, I just can’t picture RDJ in this role.

I dunno about Downey, Jr, but he just might be able to pull something like this off.

All of Robin Hobb’s books are quite something to read. I can see how this would be inspired by Assassin’s Apprentice. Nicely done, I was caught of guard at the end too.

I’ve quite enjoyed her Farseer series so far. I’m in the middle of the second book (ironically, named Royal Assassin; I swear I didn’t plan that), and it’s been a fascinating ride so far.
