To Wade the Cocytus

Two lights flicked on. Ahead was another empty hall, aside from the constant sound of dripping.

The pair moved forward, coming to a stop at a set of stairs. The way was flooded with water, about waist-high.

Webster just stared ahead, shivering somewhat.

“Don’t tell me this is still the best way.”

“Well, we might be able to go around, but this would be by far the quickest…”

The other man sighed

“I said don’t.”

And with that, he stepped into the water.

“We won’t get hypothermia, but still, we need to move fast.”

A minute later, Webster held up a hand, signalling a stop. Ahead, a corpse floated in the water. The body was badly decayed.

“Someone from the team, I assume.”

“How do you think he died?”

Oswald shrugged.

“Leave it for now.”

As Oswald shifted the body to the side, several cysts on the skin broke, and dozens of tiny creatures swarmed out into the water.

“Shit.”

The man flipped the body and fired several rounds into something embedded in the spine.

“Move! Get to the comm center!”
