Personal Justice

(Note: this is a new character talking.)

They say I’m slowing down. Maybe. The hell with it. My daddy always said old wolves don’t die sleeping.

I check the tank on the old horse with a stick. It’s more than half full. It hasn’t been like that in years. Those people are paying me good, and god knows I need it. Food, clean water, medicine. The things you took for granted all those years ago aren’t so easy to come by these days.

It’s not like I’m just doing it for the pay, mind. He’s a guilty man. Guilty men gotta be punished. They say he killed a girl. I reckon you hear all sorts of things that aren’t true these days, but you don’t get to having people say things like that about you if you haven’t done something to deserve it.

I pull my goggles down and the world goes green. I make sure Bertha is snug in her holster on my back, then kick the thousand CCs to life.

This is my favorite part. No government, no laws, no rules. Just him and me. Animal against animal. The law of the jungle. Let the best man win.
