I am kinda confused. They kill Vasily in cold blood but wants Katya alive. I would think all telepaths would be important to them. For research or something.

Of course, it could be explained by Katya being especially powerful, or Vasily as extremely low-level as to merit being part of a retrieval unit that seems to have a low survival rating.
