Oooh, I love scenes where classical music is played during carnage.
Seems a little unfortunate to put Asimov-restricted AI on a ship that has a Self-Destruct mechanism, though. Unless that was cleverly patched in after the fact by the Insurrection. ;)
Great situation, very gritty and hopeless, but with a classic sense of perseverance and ‘suck it up and deal’ sort of attitude. The exposition part felt a bit thrown together, maybe just how it was written or something. Otherwise, really liked this one.
Tesseract, I thought maybe the self destruct operates like the nuclear launch system in modern-day submarines. From my knowledge, you need two people with codes and it is done manually. Or perhaps it is just a manual system to stop it being hacked. Like a big red button.
And THX, yea, I’m still not used to writing within this character limit XD So with all my long stories, i go back and cut bits that made sense out so it fits XD
I have to agree with THX here. The exposition could have been done a little differently. A little rewording or even dialogue exposition would help a lot. That bit of criticism aside, I really dig the story. The last line where he asks the assuredly high-tech computer to be his mp3 player was a nice touch. Not many get to choose the music to accompany their deaths.
He’s going down with guns blazing, I love it :D Very well done. I agree that exposition is difficult within the constraints. Such a challenge but fun all the same.
