I’m not sure what to make of this piece – though I do like the portrayal of self-doubt. Where most of us doubt our role in some parts of life, I’m sure there are a lot of people who feel that they don’t have the right fit for who they are. I can see this being expanded into something really existential.
The story amused me. I’m not sure who “he” was or why he told the narrator to prepare that way (prepare for what?). Though it sounds like it might be some sort of theater/acting class exercise, which given your bio seems likely.
Theater majors can be really fun people. Read How Much For Just the Planet? sometime. :)
Actually, ‘the process’ is intended to be some kind of therapy – hence the reveal that the narrator is ‘a middle-aged widower who has something wrong in his head that no-one really understands’…
