Breathless

I walk down the San Francisco pier.
My fingers slowly run across the old wood.
I needed to get out— to breath.
I reach the end of the pier and stare straight down at the crystalline, shimmering blue water. I slowly bend down, taking off my emerald green flip-flops. I pause for a moment, then jump into the water.
The dive has to be at least twenty feet. The wind bites me, and everything floats for a moment. Then- splash- I am immersed. Bubbles float up and I am suddenly surrounded by blue, silky water. I float for a moment— taking in the exhilaration, the soft feeling that runs through me. My God, it feels wonderful. I take it in. My head breaks through the water and I inhale.
Air.
It feels as if I’m breathing it for the first time.
The sweet taste of salt water fills me.
As the water drips from my clothes, tears race down my cheeks.
I see people pointing, concerned tourists talking conspicuously amongst themselves. I swim to the surface, and ring out my hair.
I feel as light as air— nothing matters.
