Having read carefully, I conclude this to be a period piece, one of those “studious, misunderstood kids about to embark on a great journey around the turn of the 20th Century” pieces
“Queer’ in this case, obviously indicates weird, disenfranchised or otherwise at odds with the world and not “of alternate orientation” as the more modern politically incorrect word would mean.
This story has potential far beyond 1024, if only someone would sequel. . .
