Hm. I think the story needs the double negatives to have the meaning I intended, but as the author I’m going to be pretty biased. My intention was to always use the phrase “didn’t not” so that it is easier for the reader to see the same structure and ‘blot it out’ mentally.
As an experiment, I attached a sequel “Positive” that removed the double negatives but kept the individual meanings of each line intact; I think it doesn’t have any of the same overall meaning that this story does, but I’m curious as to the opinions of others.
As an experiment for my own curiosity, I also attached a prequel “Middling” which simply removed every instance of the word “not” with no regard to the story’s meaning. While it makes perilously little sense as a narrative, I kind of like it.
