That was a lovely moment. For all the magical aspects, the interaction could have just as easily been about a cat or a dog for the aged family member. Nice job using fantasy elements to tell a ‘real’ human story.
That was a very evocative text. Not mentioning its identity and using circumlocution made it, in my opinion at least, more effective than actually outright stating what it was.
It reminded me of the story of the blind men and the elephant. The blind men thought that the elephant was made up of many different animals; the blind man’s touch reveals that the many different animal parts (wings, scales, legs) are actually all from the same creature.
