Its about a prisoner outside for his one hour a day, after many, many years of confinement. He’s been there so long he barely remembers his old life and what he’s supposed to be sorry for, and spends his one hour trying to forget where he is. Caught in limbo, everything is so meaningless the boundary between life and death fades. Mnemosyne and Lethe are two pools in the underworld, one representing memory, and the other forgetfulness (innocence). In mythology, both are consumed before approaching the Oracle. He is asking about forgiveness, but the answer is futile, because the result has no impact- he can never leave, only stay and be reminded of a mistake he is trying to let go of.
Nice poem. I think it does a neat job of straddling the line between harsh reality and mythical/magical scope. ‘wrath of my rebellion’ was a particularly neat line.
