A letter is a crappy marker, imo. He should scratch into the stone with his nails, like a man.

Very dramatic and a brutal future. I liked the bit about praying his family was dead, morbid as that is. It really tells how bleak the situation is. Decent use of present tense, and it does fit the whole letter idea.
